I love Nature Crafts that help children engage with all the wonderful changes going on around them throughout the year. This cute hedgehog family Autumn craft is a great way to get children thinking and talking about the changes in the weather and plants and how some animals, like hedgehogs, are preparing for winter hibernation. An added bonus is it’s also a great craft to add to your fine motor skills activities list.
Supplies for your cute hedgehog Autumn craft are so easy!
I simply took the children for a walk and encouraged them to look around to see what had fallen from the trees. They found a treasure trove of sticks, leaves, acorns, conkers (buckeyes) and fir cones.
Back home I gave them some Model Air and a pair of scissors.
What is Model Air?
We were sent some model air to try from Viking. It comes in a variety of colours and we had the ‘Natural Colours’ set which lent itself really well to this craft. It is a really lightweight air drying modelling material that can be used in much the same way as clay but without the stickiness and mess!
Building Fine Motor Skills Is Fun!
The Model Air is really light and soft and easy to shape by hand or with tools. The texture is unlike any other modelling material we’ve come across and my youngest said is reminded him of marshmallows! You can even squish and squash the colours together to make new colours. It’s perfect for giving those small hand muscles a good work out as the children squash, squeeze, pull, roll and twist the shape of their hedgehog’s body.
Once the body is shaped the children can practise different fine motor skills while making the hedgehog’s quills.
Perhaps they’d like to cut them with scissors?
Or use a twig to make a repeating pattern.
Why not make a whole family of hedgehogs? It’s a cute Autumn craft for kids and a great way for you to encourage the children to use a different method for each one. What a fun way to develop a range of fine motor skills!
