Have you heard of Fairtrade Fortnight? It runs from 29 February – 13 March and it’s a fantastic time to focus on our weekly shopping and see what Fairtrade products we can switch to. A small switch by us can make the world of difference to farmers and workers around the world.
Sadly it’s a fact that millions of people in developing countries growing the food we take for granted and eat every day don’t earn enough to feed their own families and know where their next meal is coming from! We can help though, and buying Fairtrade products is a super way to make a real difference. When we buy Fairtrade we know that the farmers received a fairer price for their work and a little extra to invest in their community or business too.
Buying Fairtrade is such a simple thing for us to do yet it has the power to change the lives of others! My children loved searching for the Fairtrade mark on the products we used for these yummy Banana Ice Cream Popsicles. Here’s my little boy delighted to have spotted the mark on the bananas in Waitrose. Perhaps your kids would like to look out for the mark next time you go shopping too? How To Make Healthy Banana Ice Cream Popsicles
This tasty and healthy popsicle recipe is so easy to make and the kids are sure to find it lots of fun too. The banana ice cream is made purely from bananas so it really is good for you!
To start get the kids to slice up the Fairtrade bananas and pop them in the freezer for a few hours or preferably overnight. As a rough guide we used half a banana for each popsicle but how much you’ll need will depend on the size of your popsicle mould.
Once your bananas are frozen pop them into your food mixer with a blade attachment and let the kids press the button to start them whizzing. This is where the magic begins! To start with the bananas will chop into lumpy pieces and it looks like it’ll never turn into ice cream, but persevere and all of a sudden it will start to take on a super smooth and creamy texture…just like ice cream!
Once you’ve got your super smooth ice cream blended add a sprinkle of Fairtrade cinnamon too. We all stopped for a sneaky taste test at this point, yum!
Next, the children can spoon the mixture into the popsicle moulds and when they’re full put the whole thing back in the freezer to set for an hour.
You could eat your banana popsicles plain straight from the freezer, they are tasty and totally healthy just as they are. We decided though to use some of the yummy Fairtrade chocolate we’d bought and a few cake sprinkles to make these homemade popsicles super special and something the kids would really remember! What a great and fun way to introduce ethical shopping to kids!
To add a chocolate topping to your banana ice cream popsicles simply melt some chocolate in a bowl stood in warm water and then spoon it over the frozen popsicle and quickly spoon on some sprinkles before the chocolate sets. We used white chocolate with vanilla and milk chocolate with toffee pieces. My boys loved doing this bit!
Now your Fairtrade Banana Ice Cream Popsicles are ready to enjoy. Don’t they look pretty? You can eat them straight away or pop them back in the freezer for later.
Banana Ice Cream Popsicles are a tasty and fun recipe for the whole family to make and enjoy together and a fantastic way to introduce Fairtrade to children and know that your family is making a difference to farmers and workers’ lives across the world.
