Articulated Snake Craft Supplies
- Jumbo Popsicle Sticks
- Acrylic Paint
- Posca Pens
- Googly Eyes
- Jumbo Press Studs
- Red Felt
- Gorilla Super Glue Brush & Nozzle
This snake craft requires precise and powerful glueing and I found Gorilla Super Glue was up to the job perfectly. Reinforced with rubber to absorb bangs, drops and bumps it’s a good choice for a toy snake that’s sure to take a bit of heavy use.
Gorilla Super Glue’s two in one brush and nozzle applicators gave me all the versatility, control and accuracy I needed and its thicker formula meant no spills and no mess! You can purchase yours in your local hardware or home centre store.
How To Make a Mix ‘N’ Match Articulated Snake
Make The Snake’s Head
Start by making each snake’s head from one jumbo popsicle stick. You need to cut the stick into three with the two curved ends equal length and the middle section just wide enough to span them both.
The easiest way to do this is to find the centre of the popsicle stick and lay another stick on either side of it. Mark a line along the outer edge of each cross piece to cut along. Glue the two rounded ends together along their thin edge. Gorilla Super Glue’s precision tip is perfect for this. Next use the Gorilla Super Glue Brush, great for larger areas, to stick the centre piece of popsicle stick across the flat end of the two curved pieces. The glue will dry in just a few seconds so you’ll be able to move right on to painting,
Make the Snake’s Body
Now it’s time to start adding colour to your snake craft. Paint all your popsicle sticks and snake heads in any colors you fancy. Once the paint is dry you can add some wild and wacky patterns to your popsicle stick snake segments. Posca Pens are fab for detailed work and go straight on top of acrylic paint with no problems. Finish off your popsicle stick snake heads by glueing on some cheerful google eyes and a forked tongue cut from your red felt.
How To Get Your Snake Craft Moving and Grooving!
Now it’s time to make your snake craft articulated! Jumbo press studs are great for the job and come in two halves, an outie and an innie!
The Outies
Attach a flat based outie to the underneath of the snake’s head and the underneath of each popsicle stick body part at one end only. Use the Gorilla Super Glue brush to apply glue directly to the popsicle stick and push the press stud into place. (Adults only!)
The Innies
Now we are going to glue on the innies. The underside of the innie only has a small area in the middle that will be in contact with the popsicle stick so we need to ensure really powerful glueing is achieved.
Flip the press stud up-side-down and use the Gorilla Super Glue precision tip to apply a drop of glue right onto the middle (adults only). Flip the innie press stud the right way round and stick it to the top of each popsicle stick at the opposite end to the outie.
Now each popsicle stick should have an outie press stud at one end on the bottom and an innie press stud at the opposite end on the top. Your popsicle stick snake craft is finished and your mix ‘n’ match articulated snake is ready to SSSsslither into action!
Use the press studs to swap and change the snake body sections to make all sorts of colourful snake designs. What fun!
