Grab your rocks, your kids and your wiggles and let’s get making this cute snail rock craft. It is so much fun!
Shake Painting is what you could call a process art. The focus for kids is very much on the doing and experimenting with different paint combinations and physical shaking movements to create different results.
What’s really exciting about shake painting rock snails is that not only does it bring in a gorgeous natural element through the use of rocks, but each end result will be a surprise and every one totally unique too!
We used our shake painted rocks to make this cute snail rock craft but they’d make lovely paper weights too or how about varnishing them for garden markers?

Let’s Get Shake Painting – Cute Snail Rock Craft
Shake Paining Your Rocks
1 – First up make sure your chosen rocks fit into your plastic container and that the lid can go on. You don’t want to have shaken paint flying everywhere! You need enough space for the rock to move around when it’s shaken. Since we did this craft I saw these transparent soup containers on Amazon which I think would be a great size and I love that they’re clear so kids can actually see the process in motion.
2 – To get started with your shake painting skirt small amounts of acrylic paint into your plastic pot. We put some on the bottom and some around the sides. Pop in your stone, put the lid on and SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE!
This bit is so much fun!
3 – Half the pleasure of this snail craft is that you don’t know how your rock snail shell is going to look until it’s done. It’s worth grabbing a few rocks and experimenting with different colour combinations. When you’re done, leave your painted rocks to dry.
Making Your Snail
4 – To make our snail’s foot we cut out some pieces or cardboard and painted them different colours. Ours are about 4-5 inches long and 1 inch wide.
5 – Once your snail foot and snail shell are dry you can use the low temp glue gun to stick them together. (Adults only.)
6 – You can bring your snail to life by folding up the cardboard to make the snail’s head and then glue or draw on some eyes and a smile. I think the googly eyes work perfectly in this snail rock craft, so cute!
