So what actually is Sugru ? It’s a glue but not like you know it! If you think of your favourite superglue and play dough getting together and having a baby, Sugru would be that baby! It’s a glue that you can actually mould, shape and stick to just about anything. It’s already taken the world of grown up fixers, makers and improvers by storm and now there’s a new Family-Safe, Skin-Friendly Formula so kids can get creative and join in the DIY revolution too.

The kids and I were so excited by the possibilities Sugru gave us; we could start to creatively fix things that otherwise might have ended up in the rubbish. We live in such a throw away society I just adore that Sugru helps us adopt a more make do and mend approach that is creative, fun and exciting.
Here are some ideas that came to mind when we first got hold of Sugru . I bet you and your kids will come up with hoards more!
- Got a toy T-Rex that’s broken off a leg? Don’t throw it away, get the kids to stick it back on with Sugru. Or why not use Sugru to redesign a whole new bigger and better claw?
- Has the plastic end come off the school shoes laces making them impossible to thread through the holes? Don’t buy new laces, make a new end from colourful Sugru!
- Got a zipper that’s small and fiddly to pull? Make it easier to hold and use with homemade Sugru zipper tags. Check out how we got on with our zip tag project below.
Fun and Quirky DIY Zipper Tags
Sugru is just perfect for making this zipper tag craft. It sticks to both metal and plastic zip pulls and is nice and soft for little hands to hold.
We had such fun modelling with Sugru to make our Zipper Tags that we ended up making loads of different types!
To make the ice cream lunch box zipper tag we made a yellow triangle and pressed a fork into it to make the wafer cone texture and pattern. For the ice cream we rolled a white sausage shape and zig-zagged it on top of the cone and finished it off with a small round red cherry!
Joining the ice cream tag to the zip was super easy. We looped a sausage of Sugru through the zipper and pushed it onto the back of the ice cream to secure the 3 pieces together.
It only took 24 hours for the Sugru to set to a rubber like consistency and now the zip is so much easier to open and close with something larger to hold on to.
Tip: When leaving the Sugru to set it’s best to rest it on a piece of cling film or hanging away from the clothing (so it cannot come into direct contact with the clothing while setting). This is to protect the clothing from the Sugru sticking to it or staining it while it cures.
We wanted to use the Sugru to make some unique coat zipper tags too. My son started his spider web design by shaping a black disc and then laying some white spider webs on top. The Sugru is so pliable that it was really easy to roll super thin cobweb strands without it breaking.
He finished it off with a teeny tiny spider.
We attached it to his coat zipper in the same way as we did with the ice cream lunchbox zipper tag above.
I think it looks totally awesome and is so unique.
Because Sugru sticks to virtually anything we decided to have some fun with an old Play Mobil figure and turned it into a Zipper tag for our CD case. We rolled three long yellow strands and twisted them together to make a miniature rope.
We looped the rope through the zip and stuck it on to itself and then onto the boy’s plastic hands. Total cuteness!
