How To Make A Paper Plate and Handprint Leprechaun Mask
Supplies To Make A Leprechaun Mask
- Paper Plates (2 per mask) US / UK

Paper Plate and Handprint Leprechaun Mask Tutorial
To make each paper plate and handprint leprechaun mask you’ll need 2 paper plates. It’s helpful if they’re fairly sturdy ones like these.
To start your leprechaun mask you’ll need to cut and paint two paper plates using the photo above as a guide. To make the main part of your St Patrick’s Day mask cut the middle out of one paper plate and paint it orange.
The second paper plate is used to make the leprechaun’s hat. Cut it horizontally from one side to the other just over the half way mark and paint the biggest piece green. Cut the rim off the smaller piece and paint it black and paint the remaining section yellow.
While your painted paper plates are drying you can print out some orange handprints that you can use to make the leprechaun’s ginger beard. We used 6 hands for each beard.
To make a hat for your leprechaun mask cut away two triangular sections to make a simple hat shape. (Keep the cut pieces to make a shamrock leaf later.)
Every leprechaun needs a band and buckle on their hat so lay the black painted rim over the paper plate hat and trim off the excess.
It’s easy to make a buckle for your hat by cutting a rectangle out of the yellow paper plate piece and then cutting away its middle.
Glue your black band and yellow buckle into place and you have a wonderful hat for your leprechaun mask!
To make a magnificent ginger leprechaun beard cut out your handprints and glue them onto the edge of the orange paper plate. We stuck on two rows of three handprints.
To finish off your paper plate and handprint leprechaun mask glue the hat in place and tie on some ribbon to either side so it can be tied around a head. We used this fabulous rainbow ribbon we found on Amazon, it’s perfect for St Patrick’s Day crafts.
If you want to you can use your left over pieces of green paper plate to make a little lucky shamrock leaf to attach to your leprechaun’s hat too. We cut out 4 blunt heart shapes and a stalk.
Then we glued the pieces together to make a fab little shamrock and glued it on. It really finished off our St Patrick’s Day mask beautifully!
A leprechaun mask is a really fun way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and a great way to inspire lots of imaginative play. Who could resist being a cheeky leprechaun? Even my big teen had a turn! LOL!
