We’ve made these gorgeous Pom Pom Popsicle Stick Stars as Christmas ornaments but they are so bright, colourful and fun, that can be enjoyed all year round!
We just adore pom poms! Homemade or shop bought, big or small, pom poms can add a fantastic splash of colour and texture to all sorts of kids crafts. And they certainly do with this popsicle stick star craft!
Adorable mini pom poms make these star ornaments come to life with a beautiful and zingy display of shape and colour that kids will love!
Sticking the pom poms on is also a fabulous activity to build those little hand muscles and develop fine motor skills too!
Kids will be so proud to display their colourful pom pom popsicle stick stars on your Christmas tree, they’ll look amazing!
They’d also be lovely as a Bonfire Night craft, Diwali craft or to go with a space themed study unit.
You could also make them all year round and use them as a bright and cheery bedroom or nursery display too.

How To Make Star Ornaments
1 – To start, you need to make your popsicle stick stars. It can be tricky to put them together ensuring the star actually closes but don’t worry, I’ve already written a post with a great hack to make them! Check out my Yarn Wrapped Popsicle Stick Star Ornaments post to see how.
2 – Once you’ve made your popsicle stick stars, cut a short section of yarn and tie it into a loop around each star for hanging.

3 – Now it’s time to have fun mixing and matching all those gorgeous mini pom poms. Let the kids chose the colours and number of pompoms they want to use and where they want to place them and then have fun gluing them on!
I love watching kids pick and chose. Some children love to pick out a single colour, some like two and others like many.
Some like to space their pom poms evenly and others like a more random approach. Some children will try to fill every spare bit of space with pom poms and others will want to spread them out.
It goes to show that even with a structured craft there is still plenty of space for children’s creativity and personal taste and style!
TOP TIP: It can be helpful for kids to choose their mini pom poms before they start gluing and then to spread them out with lots of space between them. When your fingers get gluey it can be tricky to pick up just one pom pom if they are all very close together.
Once all the pom poms have been added, leave them aside to dry and then you can hang them on display for everyone to enjoy.
Variations To Further Develop Fine Motor Skills and Stretch Older Children
It can be fun to use a simple craft like these pom pom popsicle stick stars to develop fine motor skills.
You can challenge little hands further with these craft variations:
- Children can use tweezers to place the pom poms.
- Kids can try using chop sticks instead of their hands.
- How about using suction to place the pom poms? Give kids a thin drinking straw (make sure the pom poms can not fit through it, we don’t want any choking!) and see if they can suck their way to a beautiful design!
- To challenge older children you can have a strictly no hands policy! They’ll have fun trying to do all the choosing, gluing and placing of the pom poms using only tweezers, chopsticks or straws!
