How Does This dandelion Craft Help Develop My Child’s Scissor Skills?
Cutting practice helps kids to develop their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and concentration.
This cute spring craft project has fluffy yellow dandelion flowers growing through long textured grass. Both of which gives kids lots of opportunity to practice cutting with scissors.
What’s really lovely is that there are no tricky lines to cut along, so kids can focus on just snipping randomly and the results will always look fabulous.
You can use standard scissors or even have fun experimenting with ziz-zag scissors or wavy scissors too. We love this scissor set from Amazon. It has six different blade patterns which makes cutting practice so fun.
Older kids might enjoy cutting using herb scissors. These have multiple blades and cut lots of lines at once.
Whatever scissors you use, your kids can have lots of fun with their cutting practice creating their own beautiful dandelion art masterpiece!
How Can Kids Use Scissors Safely?
When it comes to using scissors with kids, safety obviously has to be a top priority. A responsible adult should always supervise children during scissor activities and make sure they are using child-safe scissors with rounded tips.
Before beginning any cutting activity make sure your children know how to use scissors safely, such as keeping fingers away from the blades, cutting only on a flat surface, and never running or walking with scissors.
What is National Dandelion Day?
This Scissor Skills Dandelion Craft is the perfect way to celebrate National Dandelion Day with your kids.
Did you know that Dandelions are so important that there’s actually a National Dandelion Day? I hadn’t heard of it until this year and I’m so pleased to have learnt about it now. I think it’s such a great idea!
Dandelion Day is celebrated on April 5th each year and is a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn about these amazing little flowers.
Are Dandelions Weeds or Flowers?
I know lots of gardeners aren’t keen on having dandelions in their garden and think of them as weeds. I’m in a different camp though and actually think they’re really pretty! After all, a weed is only a plant that we feel doesn’t belong in our flower bed!
I love a lawn full of dandelions and daisies and my kids do too! When my oldest son was very small he used to call dandelions Roar Flowers, how cute is that?
If your kids are anything like mine, then they’ll love picking the pretty yellow flowers for sensory play activities and arts and crafts. Check out our Spring Flower Sensory Bottle idea and our Meadow Gloop! They’re both so pretty and fun!
Something kids love most about dandelions is when they form big fluffy seed heads. We love blowing them to make wishes and playing dandelion clocks. Of course they’re a great way for kids to learn about seed dispersal too.
Dandelions are lots of fun for kids and they’re also really important for our buzzing friends, the bees, and other animals too! Dandelions provide a really important early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. This is so vital as they emerge from hibernation in the spring.
Why not help kids learn about bees and dandelions by teaming your scissor skill dandelions up with our lovely Handprint Bee Puppets? What a great educational combo!
Dandelions are also a very delicious treat for animals like deer and rabbits. We’ve got some super cute Pop Up Bunny Puppets that will love jumping up to munch on your dandelion craft!
So the next time you see a dandelion, remember that it’s not just a weed – it’s beautiful, educational and a vital part of our fragile ecosystem that should be celebrated! Yay to the dandelion!
Dandelion Cutting Practice Craft
This easy and fun cupcake liner dandelion craft is perfect for children of all ages and is a lovely way to encourage fine motor skills and creativity.
We’ve made our scissor practice dandelions using cupcake liners but you could also just use ordinary yellow paper if you prefer.
Craft Supplies:
Cupcake Liner Dandelion Craft Step By Step Tutorial
1 – Make the dandelion flower head by cutting all around the outside of 2 yellow cupcake liners. (If you want an even fluffier dandelion flower then you can use more cupcake liners.)
2 – Next glue the middle of the two cupcake liners together. (Don’t glue the cut edges.)
3 – Decorate the middle of your dandelion flower with a happy face by gluing on wiggle eyes and drawing a smile.
4 – Then Make the dandelion’s stem by cutting a length of green paper and gluing it onto a blue backing sheet.
5 – Now cut a dandelion leaf or two from green paper. Draw a line up the middle with green pen and then fold them in half lengthways.
6 – Glue the dandelion head and the base of the leaf onto the flower stem.
6 – To make the grass cut a rectangle of green paper wide enough to go across the bottom of your dandelion picture. If you want to you can give the upper edge a wavy shape. Then cut into it to make the blades of grass. My kids love using the herb scissors for this.
7 – Scruple up the grass a little so that it doesn’t lay completely flat and then glue it to the bottom of your dandelion art.
Now your scissor skills dandelion craft is ready to go on display. what a happy little flower and what a fun way for kids to practice cutting with scissors!
