This CURLED PAPER ANT CRAFT is so fun and so 3D! Our paper ants look adorable scuttling along the grass on a bright summer’s day. We love how happy they look and how the ant’s body and the long grass lift up from the page giving a gorgeous 3D effect!
Our paper ant art idea is easy to make using curled strips of paper. It’s a great introduction to quilling for kids but it’s much chunkier and far, far easier for little hands!
The grass is easily made with lots of scissor cuts so this is a fabulous Summer ant craft for preschoolers and elementary grades to build fine motor skills and develop hand-eye coordination.
This is a lovely ant craft for Summer Camp, the home or the classroom. We’ve made black ant pictures but you could of course make red or brown ants if you prefer.

Curled Paper Ant Craft Tutorial
1 – Cut about 1/3 off a piece of green construction paper lengthways using a wavy line.
2 – Make lots of blades of grass by cutting repeatedly into it from the curved edge towards the straight edge. (Don’t cut all the way through.) We used a pair of herb scissors which worked really well but you could use ordinary scissors.
3 – Cut a piece of black construction paper in half lengthways. Then cut one half into four long strips.
4 – Wrap two of the pieces tightly around a pen or pencil to make spirals for the head and thorax.
5 – To make the large ant’s abdomen, glue the other two black strips together lengthways and curl it around a pen or pencil too.
6 – Glue the grass onto the bottom of your sheet of blue cardstock.
7 – Glue the ant’s thorax and abdomen pieces (middle and end) above the grass so that you can see the spirals. Turn the head spiral and glue it on so that you have the flat side facing you.
8 – Glue some wiggle eyes onto the head and draw on a happy smile with a white paint pen. (We love Posca pens.)
9 – Use the black marker pen to draw on some antennae and legs.
10 – Cut some fluffy clouds from white construction paper and glue them on to the sky.
We think this ant craft idea is totally darling and so fun for Spring and Summer!
