If you’ve ever wondered how to make a 3D butterfly craft we’ll show you how today. This easy butterfly craft is made out of toilet rolls and coloured papers and is so, so simple!
I love that it upcycles old toilet roll middles but if you’re not keen on using loo roll tubes then kitchen paper towel middles can be cut in half and will work just as well.
Once kids see how easy it is to make this cardboard rainbow butterfly craft, they’ll be able to use the same technique to create their own 3D butterfly designs.
They can have fun mixing and matching different colours and even experimenting with different shapes. We’ve decorated our butterflies with rainbow stripes but what about making a spotty butterfly too?
When you’ve finished making your colourful rainbow butterflies you can enjoy showing them off. Everyone will love have bright and cheerful they are.
You can sit them on a shelf or even hang them from a string so they look as if they’re really flying!

Craft Supplies:
How To Make Rainbow Cardboard Tube Butterflies
1 – Start by cutting some thin strips of coloured paper. We chose rainbow colours but you could use any colours you like.
2 – Next, wrap the paper strips around the cardboard tube and glue them into place.
3 – Then, draw on some eyes and a happy smile.
4 – To make the butterfly’s wings, cut two rectangles of coloured paper slighter longer than the cardboard tube. Concertina fold them and then fold them in half.
5 – To make the butterfly’s antennae, cut two short lengths of pipe cleaner and curl over at one end.
6 – Glue the antennae inside the top of the cardboard tube. Then glue the wings onto the side of the butterfly’s body. Pop a dab of glue in the fold of the wings too, to stop them from opening up.
We absolutely love our Rainbow Butterfly Craft and hope that you like it too. Kids can have fun experimenting with all sorts of colours and colour combinations to make their own pretty cardboard tube butterflies.
