This adorable PAPER PLATE BIRD NEST CRAFT for kids is just perfect for spring! Up on the tree branch there’s a sweet little nest with the cutest little chick, freshly hatched from its egg, popping up to say hello!
This is a super cute and easy bird’s nest craft to make and a really fun way to chat to kids about real birds, their nesting and their natural habitats too.
Spring really is such a great time of year to encourage kids to take an interest in the natural world around us. There’s just so much going on! Buds are starting to open on the trees and the first blossoms are appearing. Frogs are spawning in the ponds and lambs and chicks are out in the fields. In our gardens we can see snails and insects coming out of hibernation and the birds busy building their nests.
When you’ve finished making your chick and nest craft why not enjoy some time outside in the yard, or nearby park or countryside watching some real birds? They’re so busy at this time of year, chattering loudly to each other and gathering sticks, moss and feathers etc. to make their real nests!
You could make yourself some fun bird spotting binoculars and even have a go at building your own nest with real twigs!
One of our favourite things to do in spring, is to brush our yellow labrador, in the garden and leave his fur in a pile on the grass. We then run inside and settle down to watch through the window. It literally only takes a few minutes before the sparrows start coming down to collect some fur for their nest building!
Last winter we had to take down a broken, crumbling, ivy covered fence and hidden inside the undergrowth we found three old nests all lined with our dog’s fur! It really was a wonderful WOW moment for the kids!
So grab your paper plates and let’s make some cute Paper Plate Bird Nests. They’re such a fun way to encourage a love of nature in our kids. When you’re done, you could make a tasty bird feeder treat for the real birds in your garden too.

How To Make A Spring Bird Nest Craft
1 – Make an L shape branch for your nest to sit on. We painted ours on blue paper but you could cut it out of brown paper and glue it on if you prefer.
2 – Cut out some leaves from green paper and fold them in half lengthways.
3 – Glue on tip of each leaf onto your tree branch.
4 – Paint a paper plate brown to make the bird’s nest. Then cut some strips of brown glitter card to make twigs and glue them on. They add a lovely sparkle and bit of texture!
5 – Cut a small circle from yellow paper to make the chick. Then cut two broken egg shells from white paper.
6 – Glue some white circle eyes onto your chick. Then draw on some pupils and a cute little beak.
7 – Cut some short strands of orange yarn and glue them onto the back of the chick’s head to make a feathery tuft.
8 – Now assemble your bird nest craft by gluing the chick and egg shells onto the blue backing paper, Then position the bird nest on top so that the chick and eggs poke out. (Top tip: Try different positions before gluing into place.)
Now your paper plate bird nest craft is ready to go on display. I hope you like it as much as we do! Such a cute spring craft for kids of all ages.
