As a girl growing up I wasn’t given much access to football because back in the dark ages it was considered a “boys game”! Thankfully times have changed and for the last 15 years Barclays Bank have been driving amazing community initiatives to make football accessible to all, regardless of age, gender or ability.
I was interested to hear that when Barclays became title sponsor for Premier League Football back in 2004 they made a commitment with the Football Foundation sports charity to bring sport into the lives of young people across the UK. They have certainly lived up to their promise investing a massive £40 million and setting up over 200 sports sites to give easy access to sport to millions of young people. Perhaps you or your children have already seen or even been involved with some of their initiatives in your local community?
What I love most about the work Barclays have been doing is that they don’t see the benefits of football starting and ending on the pitch. We all know that being active and involving ourselves in Sport is an important part of a healthy lifestyle but Barclays takes this one step further recognising how sport can help young people develop important life skills too like self-confidence, determination and team work.
Barclays is working with 17 Premier league and Football league clubs to use the power of football to engage young people and aims to support 5 million 10 to 35 year olds developing their life skills and investing in employability programmes so that they can achieve their ambitions, reach their potential and become the next generation of achievers. Now that’s what I call championing the true Spirit of the Game!
