It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… we’ve been enjoying making some delicious Mini Gingerbread Houses to hang on the Christmas tree, some tasty Gingerbread Man Oreo Cookies and now this super fun Laced Paper Plate Gingerbread Man Craft!
This cute and easy Gingerbread Man Craft has a lovely laced or threaded edge which looks super cute and is a great way for kids to build their fine motor skills this holiday season.
We liked our paper plate gingerbread man so much that we made him a little friend too, a very cute gingerbread girl! Both of our gingerbread people have lovely 3D paper bows and rosy red cheeks. They’re so adorable!
This is a great fine motor Christmas craft for kids of all ages. You’ll see from the photos that we laced and threaded all around the outside of our paper plate gingerbread people. We looped our way round on the girl and did a running stitch pattern on the boy. Trying different stitch patterns is a super way to further stretch and develop kids’ sewing skills.
We threaded our gingerbread man with white yarn, but you could use ribbon, string, fabric strips or anything else that takes your fancy.
This Laced Paper Plate Gingerbread Man Craft is a great way to encourage your child to be creative and have fun while developing important fine motor skills! They’re a super fun and festive way to decorate the home or classroom this Christmas. You could even write a Christmas greeting on the back and share them with friends and family too!

Fine Motor Gingerbread Man Craft
1 – Start by painting a paper plate with brown acrylic paint.
2 – Next, use a hole punch to make holes all around the rim. Use less holes for easier threading and more holes for more able kids.
3 – Cut a length of white yarn and tape it onto the back of the paper plate. Then invite kids to laced it in and out of the holes. You can let them doing any way they like or show them the looped stitch or running stitch methods we used. (You’ll notice that we doubled the yarn to make it thicker and show up more.)
Top Tips For Lacing The Gingerbread Man:
- Wrap a piece of sticky tape around the threading end of the yarn, to make it more rigid and easier to poke through the holes.
- Use shorter lengths of yarn rather than one long continuous piece.
4 – Keep lacing all around the edge of the gingerbread man and tape the end of the yarn onto the back of the plate.
5 – Now kids can have fun designing there gingerbread man’s face. You can simply draw it on or cut it out of coloured paper like we have.
6 – Glue the features onto the face. You’ll see we added some googly eyes and some paper eyelashes for our gingerbread girl.
7 – If you want to give your gingerbread man or lady a bow, cut out two shapes like the photo above. If you want to make it as simple as possible, just cut two diamonds and don’t worry about the curved edges.
8 – Loop the two diamond shapes over and glue them on to your gingerbread person to make a bow. Then cut a paper circle and glue it to the middle of the bow. We made a hair bow for our gingerbread girl, which you can see above, and a bowtie for our gingerbread boy, which you can see below.
This Laced Paper Plate Gingerbread Man Craft is such a cute and easy Christmas craft for kids to practice their fine motor skills! Have fun!
