Have your kids tried scrape painting before? If not, then I thoroughly recommend it! It’s a really fun and easy painting technique that gives gorgeous and unique results every single time!
In this cute craft, we’ve combined our love of scrape painting with a St Patrick’s Day theme to create these gorgeous Scrape painted shamrock windsocks.
Kids will have a great time scrape painting these happy little shamrocks. Each time you scrape paint, the results will be different. It’s always such an exciting surprise watching the colours mix and the design take shape, right in front of your eyes!
You can scrape paint your shamrocks with greens and yellows or even rainbow stripes! We loved them so much we ended up doing both!
These Shamrock Windsocks are a great way to add some colour and cheer to your St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Hang them by a door or window to catch the breeze and see the streamers flutter around. If you’ve got a covered area, you could even hang them outside.
Kids will love how the streamers flutter and blow about in the wind. You can even hold them in your hand and swoosh them around. My kids loved running around holding their windsocks. It’s so much fun to see the streamers flow out behind them!

Shamrock Scrape Painting Windsock Craft
1 – Start by downloading and printing two copies of the FREE Shamrock Template. We recommend printing onto cardstock.(Get yours by filling in the form at the bottom of this page.)
2 – We don’t want to scrape paint over the eyes so cut those off before you start. We cut the handle off too, but you can leave it on and paint it if you want.
3 – To paint your shamrock with rainbow stripes, dot the paint colours you want to use onto one side.
4 – Then take a piece of scrap cardboard and scrape the paint dots from one side of the shamrock leaf to the other.
5 – To create a mottled green shamrock leaf dot light green, dark green and yellow paint over the shamrock leaf. Then scrape the paint over the leaf in random directions until it’s covered.
6 – When your painted shamrocks are dry, carefully cut them out.
7 – Next cut out the eyes and one or two handles. Use two if you want a long handle, and one if you prefer a short handle. (We just used one.)
8 – Now glue the eyes onto the shamrocks and draw on some happy smiles.
9 – To create the streamers for your shamrock windsock, cut six lengths of crepe paper. You can make them as long or short as you like and use any colours you like. (We used rainbow colours for our green shamrock and greens for our rainbow shamrock.)
10 – Sticky tape three lengths of crepe paper onto the back of each shamrock.
11 – Now we can staple the shamrock windsock together. Start by stapling the two leaves together on the tabs.
12 – Then, staple the other two sides together to make a sort of tube.
13 – Finally staple one end of the handle onto the back of each shamrock leaf. (If you want a long handle, glue two handle strips together first.)
14 – Now you can hold your scrape painting shamrock windsock or hang it up. When it catches the wind the streamers will blow around.
I hope you have lots of fun scrape painting your own St Patrick’s Day windsocks. We think they’re so colourful and fun!
