How To Make Paper Plate Heart Suncatchers
We’ve made heart shaped suncatchers with Valentine’s Day in mind but you can use the same method to make any shape you like as long as it fits inside the paper plate.
To start, sketch a heart onto the back of your paper plate and cut it out without cutting through the plate’s rim. Small children might need some grown up help to get started.
Then decide what colour you want your heart suncatcher and paint the upper side of the paper plate. (You can paint both sides if you want to but we didn’t bother.) We used acrylic paints because they come in a great range of colours and generally give such good coverage you only need one coat which means children aren’t left waiting for coat after coat to dry.
To create a sticky window for your sequins and spangles cut out a circle of contact paper large enough to cover the heart shape but smaller than the actual plate itself. We drew around our plate and then cut an inch or so inside that line.
When your painted paper plate is dry flip it upside-down and stick your contact paper circle on to the bottom.
Now you can start making your heart suncatcher look really pretty by pushing sequins and spangles onto the contact paper so they stick. You can get bundles of sequins and spangles really cheaply now and in a range of colours. We chose to use mainly pinks and purples.
To make your heart window really pretty fill it all around with sequins and spangles.
To finish off your paper plate heart suncatcher use some sticky tape to attach a loop of ribbon onto the upper middle back to hang it from.
Now your paper plate heart suncatchers are finished and don’t they look stunning?
We made our’s in a selection of colours and they look super pretty hanging together!
Whether you’re crafting with toddlers or big kids, at home or in school, this paper plate heart suncatcher is sure to be a hit!
