Today we’ve got a super fun Climbing Popsicle Stick Spider Craft to share with you. These homemade spiders are really adorably cute and double up as a toy that kids can actually play with too! Your kids will love how easy these craft stick spiders are to make and when they’ve finished they can have a blast pulling the strings to make their spiders climb up and down the thread!
Hang your popsicle stick spiders on a door knob and when you pull the strings out to the side the spiders shoot upwards. When you let the string go the spiders slide back down to the bottom. They really are so much fun!
This is a spider craft and toy in one that’s great as a Halloween craft, to go with Itsy Bitsy Spider rhymes or for spider fans at any time of the year!
I have to admit that I’m not a natural spider fan, I’d never do them any harm but they do give me the shudders! My kids however have always been fascinated with spiders and I’ve done my best to encourage this and hide my fear. As such we have made loads of spider crafts over the years. Our favourites have been Bouncing Spiders and our Itsy Bitsy Spider Play Set. Both are interactive crafts which the kids have enjoyed playing with very much. We also love these spider puppets from Paper Magic.

How To Make Climbing Popsicle Stick Spiders
1 – To make the spiders legs lay down 4 short popsicle sticks side by side. Fan them out so that one end of each stick is touching. Add a dot of glue to each touching end and lay a 5th stick across the glue at an angle. Make sure one end of the fifth stick protrudes as this will make the spiders fang. (Use the photo as a guide.)
2 – Repeat for the second set of legs going in the opposite direction.
3 – When your two sets of spider legs have set you can make the spider body by glueing 5 popsicle sticks across to span the gap between the two sets of legs. (Use the photo as a guide.)
4 – Paint your spider any colour you like. Remember to paint the fangs white too.
5 – To make the climbing mechanism turn your popsicle stick spider craft over and glue on two small pieces of drinking straw from front to back.
6 – Cut a length of yarn a few feet long and thread an end through each pice of drinking straw and tie the two ends together in a knot to create one big loop.
7 – Decorate the front of your climbing spider with some wiggle eyes and a smile.
8 – Now you can hang the spider thread over a door knob or hook. To make the spider climb hold a thread in each hand blow the spider. Pull the threads to the side and it will force your spider up. Bring your hands back together and gravity will pull the spider back down again.
It is lots of fun to see the spiders climb up and down and once children understand the principle they can have fun designing other toys to climb up and down too.
