Kids circus skills are so much fun and offer so many learning opportunities. Lots of the equipment is really easy to make yourself and today I’m sharing how to make SOCK POI quickly, easily and cheaply. You might want to check out our colourful No-Sew Juggling Balls too.
I am so pleased I introduced my kids to circus skills, they gain so much from them and it’s something we can enjoy together too!
Circus skills are a great way to encourage older kids, tweens and teens to continue to enjoy playing outside at a time in their lives when their fondness for imaginative play and other traditional kids outside play may be reducing.
Circus skills like poi spinning and juggling also give kids lots of opportunities to develop new physical skills, balance and co-ordination and they’re also brilliant for emotional development too, increasing kids patience, determination, confidence and self esteem.
Using homemade Poi is something that kids can do alone or in groups and poi spinning encourages fitness and agility and is a fun hobby that can be carried into adulthood too.
Once kids have learnt how to make Sock Poi they’ll soon be able to start Poi Spinning and learning and inventing patterns, routines and tricks to put on an amazing Poi performance and most importantly have fun!

How To Make Sock Poi
It won’t take you long to learn how to make sock poi, it is super easy! The first thing to do is use your sandwich bags to make little balls of rice. It’s a good idea to measure the rice so each pair of poi is balanced. You can use more or less rice depending on how heavy you want your poi to be. Our bags of rice were about the size of a child’s fist.
Tie and wrap the plastic around the ball of rice repeatedly to strengthen it.
Put the bag of rice into the long over knee sock and sit it into the heel space. Then tie the foot of the sock above the rice to secure it into place. Tie a knot at the other end that will act as a handle.
We made loads of sock poi so the whole family can learn together!
We love this Poi Spinning book and have used it to learn all sorts of beginners poi tricks like Turns, Butterfly and Weaves. There are also lots of free videos online and even Poi video courses you can buy it you really want to start getting into Poi spinning more seriously.
